In a 90-minute interview with Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist, Musk discussed various topics ranging from his political engagement to the future of artificial intelligence. 1. AI Could Surpass Human Intelligence in Five Years

Elon Musk expressed his belief that artificial intelligence could surpass the collective intelligence of humanity in about five years. He spoke of a future "era of incredible abundance" where everyone could obtain everything they desire. However, he also raised concerns about the governance of this superintelligence, comparing the potential intelligence gap between AI and humans to that which exists between humans and chimpanzees. According to him, it is unlikely that chimpanzees would be in charge, thus highlighting the challenges of controlling and managing AI.

2. Accepting the Inevitable Risk of AI

Musk previously estimated that the chances of AI annihilating humanity were between 10% and 20%. While he has not changed this estimate, his approach has evolved toward a philosophical acceptance of the risks. He stated that he now prefers to "enjoy the journey," acknowledging that the momentum behind AI development has become irresistible. Even if there were a way to halt this progression, he suggested it would probably not be wise to do so. Musk also noted with some irony that his efforts to safely guide AI, including co-founding OpenAI, have actually accelerated its development.

3. Excessive Political Involvement

In a moment of personal reflection, Musk admitted that he had "gotten carried away" by politics. He played an active role in Donald Trump's 2024 reelection campaign and was involved in the early months of his administration, notably leading the Department of Government Efficiency. However, disagreements emerged, particularly around the "Big Beautiful Bill." Musk defended his involvement in the DOGE project, aimed at reducing a significant budget deficit, while acknowledging the criticism he received regarding it.

Musk proposed that major AI companies establish regular safety calls to review new models before their launch. According to him, competitors are better positioned than governments to identify potential issues. While Zanny Minton Beddoes emphasized the urgency of implementing such a system, Musk responded that "six months is a long time" given the rapid advancements in AI. To achieve this cooperation, deep rivalries would need to be overcome, particularly with OpenAI, which he co-founded and has since become a for-profit entity. Musk expressed his dissatisfaction with Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, but praised Dario Amodei of Anthropic for his integrity.

Musk firmly denied that the budget cuts made by his Department of Government Efficiency had caused any deaths. When questioned about the impact of these cuts, particularly in Africa, he asserted that no lives had been lost, dismissing reports of deaths as coming from organizations seeking to restore funding. He suggested that philanthropic foundations could have stepped in to fill the funding gap, and if they did not, they share responsibility for the consequences.
