Elon Musk and the Unexpected Impact of OpenAI

Elon Musk recently shared a surprising reflection on his contribution to the creation of OpenAI, an organization that, according to him, has had unexpected repercussions by accelerating the global race for artificial intelligence. This acceleration was not part of his initial intentions.

During a discussion, Musk mentioned the birth of Anthropic, a spin-off from OpenAI, which has also played a role in this acceleration. He proposed that competing companies should have the opportunity to review each other's AI models before they hit the market, in order to assess potential risks.

A Counterweight Turned Catalyst

Musk explained that his initial goal in supporting the founding of OpenAI was to create a counterweight to Google, which was then dominating the field of AI. However, events took an unexpected turn. In an interview with Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist, Musk admitted that his actions had paradoxically accelerated AI development, which was not his intention.

"By founding OpenAI and seeing Anthropic emerge, and now that Anthropic is a leader in AI, these actions have had spillover effects that have accelerated AI, which wasn't really my intention," he stated.

He continued by saying that all paths seemed to lead to an acceleration of AI, despite his efforts to slow down the concentration of power.

Conflicts and Legal Battles

Musk has often criticized the transformation of OpenAI, which has shifted from a non-profit research lab to an influential commercial enterprise. This evolution has led to tensions with Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. Musk even filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, Altman, Microsoft, and others, claiming $150 billion, asserting that the company had deviated from its original mission.

In May, a federal judge in Oakland dismissed Musk's claims, deeming them time-barred. Musk announced his intention to appeal this decision.

The Birth of Anthropic

During the interview, Musk also addressed the creation of Anthropic. He explained that the Anthropic team left OpenAI due to a lack of trust in Sam Altman. According to Musk, if that trust had been present, Anthropic would never have come into existence. He expressed his respect for Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, describing him as a principled person who cares about the future of the world.

Collaboration for Safety

Despite his disagreements with Altman and other AI leaders, Musk advocated for collaboration among major companies in the sector on safety issues. He suggested that competitors should have a period to review new models to flag potential problems.

"Competitors, I think, can, you know, if given a week or two to review a new model, highlight issues," Musk said. "All competitors have an interest in keeping each other honest."

He added that if a company does not respond to an identified risk, that would be the time for the government to step in and take appropriate action.
