Tesla: A Company Beyond Automobiles
Elon Musk is striving to transform Tesla's image, presenting it not just as a traditional car manufacturer, but as a pioneer in the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics. Despite appearing as a conventional automaker, Tesla delivered nearly 500,000 vehicles in the last quarter, generating 70% of its revenue from these sales. However, Musk is increasingly emphasizing innovations in AI, thereby shifting the company's focus.
Growing Attention on AI and Robotics
For several years, Musk has been steering Tesla towards ambitious projects related to artificial intelligence, such as the humanoid robot Optimus and fully autonomous robotaxis. These initiatives now seem to take center stage in his speeches, overshadowing the daily concerns of a car manufacturer. To better understand this evolution, an analysis was conducted by Hudson Labs, a financial research firm, in collaboration with a technology-focused platform.
Analysis of Quarterly Discussions
Hudson Labs utilized transcripts of Tesla's earnings calls, provided by S&P Market Intelligence since 2019, to assess the frequency of topics discussed by Musk. Using the Co-Analyst tool, specialized in financial research, it was determined that Musk now dedicates nearly 50% of his time to discussing AI and robotics, compared to 15% to 20% in previous years.
Autonomy as a Valuation Driver
Musk has often claimed that autonomy justifies Tesla's high valuation. During a call in the first quarter of 2024, he stated, "If you value Tesla solely as a car company – fundamentally, that's the wrong framework." According to him, those who do not believe in Tesla's ability to solve autonomy should not invest in the company.
Optimus: Tesla's Humanoid Robot
Since the announcement of the development of the humanoid robot Optimus in 2021, Musk's interest in this project has significantly increased. While he dedicated less than 2% of his time to it in 2022, this figure rose to 10% the following year, reaching nearly a third of his discussions during the third-quarter call in 2025.
A Shift in Focus Within Tesla
As Tesla's automotive activity stagnates, Musk is reducing the time spent discussing cars and manufacturing during earnings calls, focusing less than 20% of his time on these topics during the last third-quarter call. In contrast, other Tesla executives, such as Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja and Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy, continue to dedicate about 30% of their time to automotive activities.
A Shared but Deferred Vision
While other Tesla executives are beginning to adopt Musk's vision on AI and robotics, they remain somewhat reserved compared to his enthusiasm, likely due to the lack of concrete feedback from these projects. Previously, they spent over 50% of their time on manufacturing and selling cars, but increased competition has altered this dynamic since 2024.
The Future According to Tesla
Despite the challenges, Tesla's executives share Musk's optimism about the company's future. "The path to incredible abundance is always difficult and requires bold bets," Taneja stated during a call in 2024. The emphasis is on the non-linearity of progress, but with the promise of a bright future.
