According to a recent theoretical study, the use of language models may not necessarily make research more effective. Even with perfect systems, two out of three modeled scenarios result in a decrease in the quality of individual articles. The authors explain this by a shift in efforts towards launching new projects at the expense of improving ongoing work.
Two out of three scenarios predict a decline in quality
Three scenarios for integrating language models into research have been modeled. In two of them, the quality of individual publications decreases. The study suggests that research could become less efficient, even if the language models functioned perfectly. The analysis specifically focuses on these models.
Time saved by AI redirects researchers' efforts
According to the study, the time saved thanks to AI makes researchers' remaining hours more valuable. This time is then devoted to launching new projects rather than improving ongoing projects. The authors conclude that scientists could produce more work, but of lower quality, instead of less work that is better executed. These conclusions stem from a recent theoretical study.
