Eufy Launches EdgeAgent, Local AI for Subscription-Free Security

Eufy, a brand known for its subscription-free home security solutions, recently garnered attention during Anker Day with a significant announcement. The company unveiled EdgeAgent, an artificial intelligence agent that operates locally on a new companion device, the Smart Security Shield.

The Smart Security Shield is a device that combines a sensor and a camera, offering a 180-degree field of view. Primarily designed for outdoor use, it incorporates digital security key technology to prevent unauthorized access. Thanks to its embedded AI chip, it utilizes facial recognition to identify friends and family from up to 30 meters away. Eufy specifies that this device will be compatible with several hardware sets and services from the brand.

One of the main advantages of EdgeAgent is its fully local operation, meaning there is no need to exchange data with online servers. According to Eufy, this allows for 63% faster AI processing than the cloud-based systems of its competitors, reducing delays to just a few seconds. EdgeAgent is capable of processing data and triggering specific security measures based on its analysis, such as activating a spotlight, issuing a vocal warning, or sending an alert to a phone, including a text description of what the camera sensor detects.

These features are common among major security brands like Blink, Ring, Google Nest, and Arlo. However, Eufy's version stands out for two notable aspects.

The Two Unique Advantages of Eufy's AI Agent

First, Eufy's app supports local video storage, among other privacy-focused features. Unlike other brands, capabilities such as facial recognition and descriptive alerts based on AI analysis have always required a subscription, with fees ranging from $4 to $20 per month. Eufy maintains its subscription-free model, making it the most affordable way to obtain such detection.

Second, with no cloud data and Eufy's local video storage practices, this use of AI is safer and more privacy-focused than the versions found in other security cameras. While nothing is completely secure, when processing remains on the device, it is less likely to be used to train AI models, stolen during a data breach, or spied on by company employees, especially with additional encryption. Eufy also offers cloud storage services for those who desire it.

Eufy plans to launch its AI with the Smart Security Shield in the second half of 2026. The brand promises to keep its users informed when the opportunity arises to test and compare these new features with those of existing paid solutions.
