ChatGPT Invades Excel and Google Sheets: A New Era for Spreadsheets
OpenAI has recently introduced an innovative feature, ChatGPT Sidebar, which integrates directly into the popular spreadsheet applications, Excel and Google Sheets. This new extension promises to transform the way users interact with their data. The installation is simple and quick, allowing users to immediately benefit from ChatGPT's advanced capabilities.
To integrate ChatGPT into Google Sheets, users need to access the Home menu, then navigate to Extensions, Add-ons, and finally select Get add-ons. Once there, simply search for "ChatGPT," install the tool, open it, and log in to your personal account.
In Excel, the process is just as intuitive. Users should go to the Add-ins section of the Home tab. After searching for "ChatGPT," the tool can be installed, appearing in the ribbon above the workbook. A connection to your account is then necessary to start using the offered features.
Expanded Features for Simplified Use
The arrival of ChatGPT on Excel and Google Sheets opens up new possibilities for users. The tool allows for a multitude of tasks, ranging from creating file structures to modifying and updating tables. One of the major advantages is that ChatGPT always seeks the user's consent before making any changes, thus ensuring complete control over the data.
ChatGPT is also capable of detecting trends in data spread across multiple tabs, making it easier to identify anomalies that might otherwise go unnoticed. This feature is particularly useful for those who spend long hours analyzing complex data.
According to Jack R. Curran and other members of the OpenAI team, the tool is designed to be versatile, adapting to both personal projects and more demanding professional needs. Whether it's organizing a wedding, drafting a business plan for a café, managing the finances of an online venture, or analyzing business data, ChatGPT offers practical and understandable solutions in natural language.
File Importing: Increased Flexibility
ChatGPT Sidebar is not limited to simple spreadsheets. It also allows for the import of various types of files, thereby increasing its versatility. Users can import images in JPEG, JPG, PNG, and GIF formats, as well as documents such as PDF, Word (.docx), RTF, and OpenDocument (.odt). PowerPoint presentations (.pptx) and Excel spreadsheets, CSV, TSV, and IIF files are also supported.
Moreover, the tool accepts numerous code and text formats, including Markdown, HTML, JSON, TOML, YAML, and CSS. Other types of text files, such as emails (.EML), ICS calendars, VCF contacts, and subtitle files like .srt and .vtt, can also be used. However, there are limits: up to 20 files can be added per message, with a maximum size of 25 MB per file.
Limited but Promising Access
Although still in beta, ChatGPT Sidebar is accessible worldwide. However, only users with a paid ChatGPT subscription can currently try this feature. Subscribers to the Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, K-12, as well as Pro and Plus plans are eligible to test the tool.
It is important to note that ChatGPT Sidebar operates independently of the classic ChatGPT history. The data and exchanges made in Excel and Google Sheets are not synchronized with regular conversations. However, users can access applications associated with their account, subject to their workspace settings, application availability, as well as permissions and data sources.
