An Unexpected Disruption for Sean McDonnell

Sean McDonnell, a UK-based entrepreneur, recently faced an unexpected disruption in his use of artificial intelligence for his business. Specializing in web design and managing a SaaS site, McDonnell heavily relies on AI to carry out his projects. However, while actively using Fable 5, an Anthropic model, he encountered an access shutdown ordered by the White House. This situation highlighted the crucial importance of having backup solutions in place for unforeseen interruptions of AI tools.

AI at the Heart of the Business

For McDonnell, AI has become a central pillar in the development of his business. Since launching his web design venture earlier this year, he has also created a site providing software to help businesses manage their waste. Together with his partner, he manages these projects and hires subcontractors for certain tasks, including software development. In this context, AI tools have become indispensable for optimizing operations.

Recently, McDonnell was drawn to the promising performance of Fable 5 from Anthropic, which he discovered through numerous online publications. However, his enthusiasm was short-lived. Shortly after he began using the model, he was forced to cease its use due to a U.S. government directive, abruptly interrupting his work without warning.

A Lesson in Resilience

Although the sudden halt of Fable 5 was a shock, McDonnell was prepared for such eventualities. This experience reminded him that relying solely on AI for managing a business is risky. He thus reinforced the importance of having a backup plan to address unforeseen circumstances.

Despite his desire to fully test Fable, McDonnell continued to use other AI tools, such as OpenAI's Codex for repetitive coding tasks, and Claude for the aesthetic aspects of products. These tools allowed him to transform the architecture of his code in record time, a task that would have otherwise taken weeks.

McDonnell had initially planned to use Fable for a comprehensive security audit of his product. However, access was cut off while the model was in the process of modifying key elements of the code. It was only the next day that he learned this interruption was due to a U.S. government decision to restrict foreign access to Fable.

The Need for Ongoing Preparedness

This was not the first time McDonnell encountered difficulties with AI tools. In the past, he had already experienced interruptions with Opus 4.6, another AI model, due to its excessive token consumption. This experience prompted him to better prepare for future unforeseen events.

During his recent project, McDonnell had asked Fable to create a guide that other AI models could follow. This precaution allowed him to transfer the remaining tasks to Codex and Claude 4.8 after the Fable shutdown. Thanks to this preparation, the impact of the interruption was limited, although it did disrupt their workflow.

The Importance of a Plan B in the Age of AI

The incident with Fable reinforced McDonnell's belief that it is essential not to rely solely on AI. If a total shutdown of AI access were to occur, his business could continue to operate, although it would increase costs by necessitating the use of human developers.

In the current context, it is crucial to diversify the AI tools used and to carefully document processes to ensure continuity in the event of a model withdrawal. McDonnell feels confident in his ability to pass on his knowledge to a developer thanks to his detailed documentation.

A representative from the White House stated that the Trump administration is working with leaders in the AI industry to balance innovation and national security concerns. Anthropic has yet to respond to requests for comment.
