The AI infrastructure operator is discussing a funding round that would place its valuation between $30 and $40 billion, up from $17.5 billion in July. The talks remain preliminary and come shortly after the discovery of unauthorized access related to internal credentials.

Unauthorized Access Detected on Customer Accounts

Fireworks AI reported earlier this month that it had identified the unauthorized use of internal credentials. According to the company, this access allowed an intruder to reach the data of certain customer accounts. Lin Qiao stated on X that she takes the incident seriously and is committed to transparency regarding the facts and findings. She claims to want to turn this attack into a particularly robust security response within the AI infrastructure.

New Funding Round Discussed at $30–40 Billion, Evolving Goals

The company is in preliminary discussions for a funding round aiming for a valuation between $30 and $40 billion. These talks are still in the early stages, and the goals could still evolve, with Fireworks AI declining to comment. Last month, it was reported that the company was considering a round around $30 billion. In July, the company had a valuation of $17.5 billion and was mentioned at nearly $18 billion. This level followed the announcement of a Series D round of $1.5 billion at a $17.5 billion valuation, led by Atreides Management, Index Ventures, and TCV, with participation from Nvidia, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Menlo Ventures. Previously, a Series C round of $250 million at a $4 billion valuation was completed at the end of 2025, co-led by Lightspeed, Index, and Evantic.

Positioning: Models Tailored to Customer Data and Workflows

Fireworks AI prioritizes custom models designed around each client's proprietary data, workflows, and use cases, rather than a consumer-facing chatbot. The company offers a computing platform for rent, as well as software that serves to run, adjust, and deploy open-weight and custom models. In July, it announced that its annualized revenue had surpassed $1 billion. It also reported serving over 40 trillion tokens per day, with 95% coming from customer-adapted models.

Team Origins and Competition in AI Infrastructure

Founded in 2022 by veterans of Meta and Google’s AI programs, Fireworks AI is led by Lin Qiao, a former head of the PyTorch team at Meta. The co-founders include former infrastructure engineers from Meta and a former head of Google Vertex AI. The company operates in a highly competitive segment, facing startups like Together AI, Baseten, and Replicate, as well as established cloud players such as AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle.
