AI Fraud: Fake Students and Misappropriated Aid in the USA
Scammers are enrolling as fake students in American community colleges and using AI to collect financial aid. According to The New Yorker, these fraudsters enroll fake students in courses to receive financial aid, then use AI to complete the required assignments.
Professor David Song from East Los Angeles College noticed this issue a few years ago. Students with generic Anglo-Saxon names began appearing in his history class, while the majority of students are Latino and Asian. Their claims about courses on topics related to Asian Americans did not match up, according to Song.
Song allows AI in his classes but requires labeling and academic honesty. No one follows these rules, he says, "even with content that is clearly generated." The most severe abuses occur in asynchronous online courses, where students remain anonymous. Other teachers share similar frustrations. History professor David Roach estimates that more than half of his students use AI for their assignments. "Was it always true that half of our students would cheat if it was easy enough?" he asked.
