Starting October 9, free users of Gemini will only have access to Flash-Lite. The AI Plus plan will also lose the Pro model, while AI Pro will benefit from the Deep Think mode. Meanwhile, Google is refining computation-based quotas, renewed every five hours, and introducing error levels per model.
Computation-based quotas, renewed every five hours
The use of Gemini will be governed by a limit based on the computing power consumed, rather than a fixed number of requests or conversations. This limit will be renewed every five hours until a weekly quota is reached. The available volume will depend on the complexity of the requests, the features used, and the length of the exchanges. Paid accounts will have higher ceilings than free accounts. Premium tasks and models will consume these ceilings more quickly. Generating an image or video, using Deep Research or Deep Think, or accessing the Pro model will deplete credits faster than ordinary requests.
Restricted access and key date of October 9
Google plans to restrict access to the Gemini models for free accounts, which will be limited to the Flash-Lite model. Users of the app and website will soon only be able to use a single model. According to Google, access to Flash and Pro will be removed from free accounts starting Friday, October 9. Subscribers to the AI Plus plan at $5 per month will also lose access to the Pro model on that same date and will retain Flash and Flash-Lite.
AI Pro gains Deep Think, the option previously reserved for AI Ultra
The AI Pro plan at $20 per month will grant access to the Deep Think reasoning mode. This capability is currently reserved for AI Ultra offerings, priced at $100 or $200 per month.
Configurable error levels and effects on consumption
Each model will offer a setting for the error level between low, medium, and high. A higher level will increase the model's ability to perform tasks and provide detailed responses but will consume usage limits more quickly.
Range of offers and profiles of available models
Gemini can be used through five modalities: free access, the AI Plus plan, the AI Pro subscription, and two AI Ultra plans. Currently, each offer provides three models: 3.8 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.1 Pro. Flash serves a versatile role for usual uses: providing information, summarizing documents, producing and reviewing images, or conversing. Flash-Lite has a higher speed, at the cost of slightly lower performance, making it suitable for repetitive operations but unsuitable for uses requiring deep knowledge or reasoning. Pro is the most analytical, effective on complex problems in mathematics, logic, and programming. In the cheaper offers, Flash is generally selected by default, while free accounts typically see Flash-Lite by default, with their access to the other two models being restricted. With the announced changes, a free user who wants Flash will have to upgrade to AI Plus, and an AI Plus subscriber who needs the Pro model will have to migrate to AI Pro. Subscriptions operate on a monthly basis, with the option to retain free access or change plans each month.
