Google's Gemini Declines Against ChatGPT and Claude

Google's Gemini is losing market share to ChatGPT and Claude, according to new market data. The text recognition analysis platform Pangram examined the market shares of models based on submitted texts. OpenAI has maintained over 50% each month since tracking began. Anthropic has increased from 4.3% to 14.9%, primarily in technical and scientific fields. Gemini has plummeted from 12% to just 1.9% in July 2026, which Pangram describes as a "collapse," also reflected in data from OpenRouter.

Pangram and OpenRouter track very different usage models, but both show that Gemini's market share is declining.

Data from Similarweb indicates that Google's website market share slightly decreased last month, dropping from 27% to 26.8%, although it was only 9.4% a year ago. Google claims one billion monthly users of the Gemini app, although the number of active monthly users is a very low-quality signal.

Each source has its blind spots. Pangram primarily measures writing tasks where Gemini has always lagged behind Claude and ChatGPT. OpenRouter is biased towards open-weight models. Similarweb overlooks mobile applications. Despite these differences, all three sources tell the same story: people are using Gemini less. This may help explain the recent reshuffle at Google DeepMind, which has seen several prominent figures depart, including Demis Hassabis.
