Google Maps Integrates Ask Maps for an Interactive Experience
This Thursday, Google introduced a new feature called Ask Maps in its Google Maps application, powered by the artificial intelligence Gemini. This innovation presents itself as a "conversational experience," allowing users to interact naturally with the app. They can ask follow-up questions, rephrase their requests, and discover new suggestions, similar to what Gemini already offers for smart home devices.
While Google Maps has long provided voice navigation for routes, Ask Maps goes further by answering questions about travel details and the surrounding area. For instance, if your phone's battery is low, you can ask Ask Maps to locate a nearby charging station. Similarly, for those looking for a well-lit tennis court to play in the evening, this feature can be very helpful. It also offers detailed recommendations for stops and tips when visiting popular tourist sites. Gemini learns from the information you have already saved in Maps, such as your restaurant preferences.
A Google representative has not yet responded to requests for comments. These conversational features are also integrated into the more traditional commands of Gemini. Once the app update is completed, directions should appear more natural and better align with the elements displayed on the map.
Currently, Ask Maps is being rolled out to users in the United States and India. The enhanced features of Maps are expected to be available on platforms like CarPlay and Android Auto in the coming months.
