Operational Issues for Gemini in Google Workspace
On Wednesday morning, Google Workspace users experienced difficulties with the AI assistant Gemini. These issues were confirmed by Google at 3 AM PT (6 AM ET) via an update on their status dashboard. At this point, the exact cause of these malfunctions remains unknown. The number of users affected by this outage is not clearly defined.
The site DownDetector, which monitors service interruptions, recorded over 1,300 reports concerning issues with Google Gemini since 3 AM PT. This site is owned by Ziff Davis, the same parent company as CNET, and is closely tracking the evolution of this situation.
Confirmation of Affected Platforms by Google
Google specified that several of its services integrated into Workspace, such as Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, are affected by these malfunctions. An update released at 8:10 AM PT revealed that the Gemini application in Workspace, which includes these services, is malfunctioning across multiple platforms:
- Web
- MacOS
- iOS
- Android
- Gemini in Chrome
Users on these platforms are encountering an error message stating "something went wrong." For now, no workaround has been proposed. Google plans to provide a new update at 12:30 PM PT.
Extensive Integration of Gemini and Its Challenges
Google has extensively integrated its AI Gemini into its products over the years. Thus, when issues arise, like today, it can affect a wide range of services. However, Google clarified that the current outage is limited to Workspace users. For instance, the Google Health app, which replaced the old Fitbit app, does not appear to be affected. During an interaction with the chatbot of this app, cold symptoms were discussed, but Gemini reminded users not to rely on its medical advice.
The increasing integration of AI into Google products raises complexity and the potential for malfunctions.
Nature of the Problem with Gemini
Google has not yet identified the precise cause of the issues encountered with Gemini. For Workspace users, this translates to error messages stating "Something went wrong." Google has classified this incident as a service interruption, rather than a total outage. As of 8 AM PT, no workaround was available.
It is likely that Google's technical teams detected these issues late at night or early in the morning, before most users began their workday. Currently, they are focused on analyzing and resolving these malfunctions. We will continue to monitor the situation and inform users as soon as the problem is resolved.
