In 2025, Google took a significant step by integrating its NotebookLM tool directly into Gemini, its chatbot application. This merger, combined with the image generator Nano Banana, aims to close the gap with ChatGPT in terms of popularity and users. With these updates, Gemini could attract a broader audience thanks to its new capabilities.

NotebookLM is an advanced research tool that allows users to incorporate their own sources, such as YouTube videos, PDFs, or web pages, to generate responses in various formats like infographics, audio podcasts, or videos. Until now, users had to go through a separate application to access these features.

What has changed now is that users can switch from Gemini to NotebookLM without leaving the application, thus facilitating collaborative work and task continuity. Data can be synchronized between the two platforms, allowing for a smooth transition between tasks started on one and continued on the other. For example, a notebook created on NotebookLM can be enhanced on Gemini, and vice versa.

A Simplified User Experience

On the Gemini app, a new section in the menu allows users to create a new notebook and add sources, or to open previously created notebooks. However, this feature may not yet be available to all users. Google has clarified that the rollout begins this week for Google AI Ultra, Pro, and Plus subscribers on the web.

In the coming weeks, access will be extended to mobile devices, to more European countries, and to users of the free version. This strategy could give Google a competitive edge by increasing the visibility of NotebookLM through its integration into Gemini.
