Google Introduces File Generation in Gemini

Google has recently enhanced its conversational agent Gemini with a long-requested feature: on-demand file generation. This update, announced in a blog post, now allows users to create documents directly during a conversation with Gemini. This advancement follows in the footsteps of Anthropic, which integrated a similar feature into its Claude agent since September 2025.

A New Feature Available Since April 2026

Since April 29, 2026, Gemini users can create documents intended to be finalized in other software such as Excel, Word, or Google Slides. Among the possibilities offered are exporting a budget proposal as an Excel file, organizing ideas into bullet points, or condensing a collaboration into a PDF or Word document. Google emphasizes that this update aims to facilitate the transition from draft to final version without the hassle of manual reformatting. A document co-created with Gemini can also be exported directly to Google Drive.

File Formats Supported by Gemini

Gemini supports a wide range of file formats. Users can export their documents to Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel). Universal formats such as PDF, CSV, plain text, Rich Text Format, Markdown, and LaTeX are also supported.

Simplified Procedure for Generating Files

Creating files with Gemini requires no prior activation. Users can simply enter their request in the input bar, specify the desired format, and download the generated file. Gemini can also convert attachments, such as handwritten notes, into the chosen format.

Global Rollout Underway

Google has indicated that this feature is being rolled out globally for both free users and paid subscribers. However, at the time of writing this article, it was not yet accessible on the free version.
