Gemini Gems: Advanced Personalization by Google
The Gems offered by Google are presented as personalized GPTs, providing a tailored user experience. These chatbots are designed to remember your instructions, thus avoiding the tedious repetition of the same information with each new interaction. Once you have set up the instructions and function of a Gem, you can continuously enrich its knowledge, making it an expert in a specific area to assist you with various tasks such as brainstorming or content creation.
With the multitude of AI tools offered by Google, it can be challenging to choose the right tool for a specific task, especially when several of them seem to offer similar features. This article explores how to get started with Gemini Gems and when to consider other options like Gemini Notebooks to achieve your goals.
Understanding Gemini Gems
Google describes Gems as "custom AI experts" that add a unique dimension to conversations with chatbots. By personalizing a Gem, you give it a distinct "personality" and define how it should assist you. You have the option to upload your own files, link content from Google Drive, import personal code, and even connect the Gem to a Gemini Notebook.
To achieve a specific outcome from your Gem, you can set a default tool during its configuration. Although no default tool is initially defined, you can choose to prioritize results in the form of videos, music, or images according to your preferences.
Gemini also offers pre-made Gems that you can customize if you're short on ideas. Among the available options are tools for brainstorming, career guides, productivity planners, and sales pitch ideators. For those seeking additional inspiration, an unofficial site provides pre-made "prompts" for creating Gems.
Creating a Gem
Creating a Gem is a relatively straightforward process, but its effectiveness will depend on the instructions and knowledge you provide. You can always return to enrich its instructions over time, making Gems as simple or complex as you wish.
For example, I created a Gem to recommend movies. I provided simple instructions, indicating that it should have a broad knowledge of cinema and suggest films I might enjoy. To further personalize it, I included my favorite genres and a list of my favorite movies in the instructions, thus avoiding any initial assumptions.
This approach paid off. As soon as I began interacting with the Gem, it asked a series of questions to refine its recommendations, even suggesting three of my favorite movies that I hadn't mentioned in the settings. I asked the Gem to add these films to its instructions so it would have that context for future interactions. However, although it claimed to have updated my taste profile, those films did not appear in the instructions after reloading. The ability to update instructions directly in the conversation would be a welcome improvement, unlike Claude Projects, which remember additional films provided in other conversations.
Steps to Set Up a Gem
Setting up a Gem is quite intuitive.
- Log in to Gemini.
- Click on the settings icon at the bottom of the left sidebar.
- Choose a pre-made Gem from Google or click on + Create New.
If you opt to create a new Gem, you will be guided through a setup screen. Here are the steps to follow:
- Name your Gem.
- Provide a brief description of its function.
- Give detailed instructions to your Gem.
- Select a default tool (or leave this choice open).
- Upload files if necessary.
For those who need additional assistance, Google offers a guide to maximize the use of Gems.
Comparison Between Gem and Standard Gemini
While Gemini is a powerful tool capable of performing all the tasks a Gem can accomplish, there are reasons you might prefer to use a Gem.
-
Gems maintain a consistent personality based on your instructions. Unlike standard Gemini discussions, you do not need to redefine your desired personality with each new session.
-
Another advantage of Gems is the ability to add files and documents to their settings just once, rather than having to upload them with each new conversation with Gemini.
Gems provide more consistent responses in their area of expertise, making them an optimal choice for specific uses compared to a more general option like Gemini.
Gems and Gemini Notebooks
Although Gems are powerful tools, they do not always meet all needs. They essentially function as specialized AI chatbots, using the context you provide to scour the internet for answers.
If you want responses to be exclusively based on the information you have provided, the Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) is the best option. The Notebook considers your sources authoritative and bases its responses solely on that material.
In a test, I added a Notebook to my Gem with a list of my favorite movies not mentioned in the Gem's instructions. When asking for my favorite movies, the Gem listed both the titles provided to the Gem and those added only to the Notebook. This expected behavior allowed for even better recommendations. Connecting a Notebook to a Gem does not prevent the Gem from accessing the internet but allows it to use the Notebook for additional context.
