Genesis AI, a French startup, recently raised $105 million to develop an artificial intelligence model aimed at revolutionizing robotics. This model, named GENE-26.5, aims to equip robots with physical manipulation capabilities comparable to those of humans. This funding round, completed less than a year ago, has allowed Genesis AI to step into the spotlight and present its foundational AI model specifically designed for robotics.

The GENE-26.5 model is supported by an innovative system that includes a data engine and a robotic hand capable of faithfully reproducing the human hand. This system aims to enable a direct transfer of human skills to robots, a crucial step toward achieving a level of dexterity and precision never before seen in the field of robotics.

A Revolutionary Glove for Robot Learning

In order for the robotic hand to learn and replicate human movements, Genesis AI has developed a data collection glove. This glove is equipped with electronic skin featuring tactile sensors, allowing the human operator to convert their movements into robotic skills. Thanks to this technology, the gestures performed by the operator are transformed into smooth and rapid movements by the robotic hand.

To bridge the morphological gap between humans and machines, Genesis AI utilizes a data engine that leverages videos captured by operators equipped with cameras, as well as vast volumes of videos available online. This approach enriches the AI model with a variety of movements and situations, thereby enhancing the learning and adaptation capabilities of the robots.

Théophile Gervet, co-founder and president of Genesis AI, emphasizes the importance of a full-stack approach, integrating both AI and hardware to create a cohesive system. By mastering each step of the process, Genesis AI ensures that it addresses the robotics challenge in its entirety. Founded in December 2024 by Gervet, a former researcher at Mistral AI, and Zhou Xian, a researcher from Carnegie Mellon University, the startup aims to push the current boundaries of robotics.

Robots with Impressive Capabilities

To illustrate the potential of its AI model, Genesis AI released a video showcasing its robotic system in action. In this video, a robot is seen performing a series of manual tasks requiring great dexterity and precision. Among these tasks, the robot prepares a meal, makes a smoothie, conducts laboratory experiments, plays the piano, and solves a Rubik's Cube.

These demonstrations mark a significant advancement compared to previous robots, often characterized by their clumsiness and slowness. Zhou Xian, co-founder and CEO of Genesis AI, is excited about the progress made, stating that the startup has developed the most advanced versions of the robotic brain and hand in the industry. For the first time, robots can perform tasks that were previously reserved for human hands, and they do so reliably and at scale.

The $105 million funding round, backed by prominent investors such as Xavier Niel and Eric Schmidt, the former head of Google, has enabled Genesis AI to pursue its ambitions. The startup, which is growing between Paris and Silicon Valley, plans to unveil its first general-purpose robot soon. This presentation could include a spectacular demonstration at the VivaTech event, showcasing the revolutionary capabilities of GENE-26.5.
