GitHub Reaches New Heights Thanks to AI
GitHub, the development platform owned by Microsoft, has recently experienced an exceptional month, according to a company executive. This record performance is attributed to a notable increase in the use of Copilot, GitHub's AI-assisted coding tool. This success comes at a time when GitHub faces increasingly intense competition.
In June, GitHub observed a marked increase in user engagement, a direct result of a change in its billing model for Copilot. GitHub's Chief Technology Officer, Vladimir Fedorov, shared this news during a meeting with employees, highlighting that June was the best month ever recorded for the platform. However, he chose not to disclose specific figures due to the impending close of the financial quarter.
Fierce Competition in the AI-Assisted Coding Market
This growth is crucial for GitHub, which must compete with players like Cursor, OpenAI's Codex, and Anthropic's Claude Code. These tools, like Copilot, assist developers in writing, editing, and correcting code. Although Microsoft declined to comment, Fedorov expressed his view that a significant price increase was unnecessary, despite the rise in Copilot usage. No concrete plans regarding future pricing have been announced.
A New Billing Model for Copilot
Since June 1, GitHub has adopted a new billing model for Copilot. Instead of a fixed rate per user, billing is now based on actual usage of the tool. This change brings GitHub closer to the practices of its competitors, who also charge based on consumption.
GitHub Facing Technical Challenges
Acquired by Microsoft in 2018, GitHub is a favored platform among developers for code storage and management, as well as for collaboration on projects. Despite an initial advantage due to its popularity, GitHub must now contend with increased competition from Cursor and Anthropic's Claude Code. During an internal meeting at the end of the previous year, a Microsoft executive emphasized the need to modernize GitHub to remain competitive, according to an audio recording reviewed by Business Insider.
Capacity Issues and Proposed Solutions
The increase in GitHub's usage has led to several major outages in 2026. To address these capacity issues, Microsoft is considering collaborating with its main cloud competitor, Amazon, according to a recent report from Business Insider.
