GitHub Copilot: A New Era of Token-Based Billing
Starting June 1, 2026, GitHub will introduce a significant change in how Copilot users are billed. Moving away from the premium request-based model, the platform will switch to a billing system based on actual token usage. This new approach, dubbed "GitHub AI Credits," will account for tokens consumed during input, output, and caching processes, with rates tailored to the APIs of each model.
Maintenance of Base Rates
The base rates for the various subscription plans will remain unchanged. Thus, Copilot Pro will stay at $10 per month, Pro+ at $39, Business at $19 per user, and Enterprise at $39 per user. Each subscription will include AI credits equivalent to the cost of the subscription, and it is important to note that code completions will not consume these credits.
Smooth Transition for Business Customers
To facilitate this transition, GitHub plans to offer additional credits to Business customers from June to August. This measure aims to ease the adaptation to the new billing system.
Justification for the Change
Mario Rodriguez, product director at GitHub, explained in a blog post that this evolution addresses the variable computing costs associated with agentic usage. He illustrated this situation by highlighting that a simple question asked in a short exchange can cost as much as a standalone coding session lasting several hours.
Overview of Invoices and Data Usage
Before the new model takes effect, a preview invoice will be available starting in early May. Additionally, GitHub announced that from April 24, 2026, user interaction data from Free, Pro, and Pro+ plans will be used for AI training, unless users choose to opt out.
