GitHub Modifies Its Data Policy for Copilot
Starting April 24, 2026, GitHub will implement a new policy regarding the use of Copilot interaction data. Users on the Free, Pro, and Pro+ plans will have their data used to train artificial intelligence models unless they explicitly choose to opt out.
The types of data involved include prompts, generated outputs, code snippets, file names, repository structures, and user feedback. Those who have already opted out will retain their current settings.
Exclusion for Certain Users and Data Sharing
Customers using Copilot Business and Enterprise will not be affected by this new policy. According to Mario Rodriguez, product director at GitHub, using data from real-world conditions helps improve the performance of AI models. Internal tests, based on data from Microsoft employees, have already shown significant improvements in acceptance rates.
The collected data may be shared with Microsoft but will not be passed on to third-party AI model providers. Users wishing to opt out of this data collection can do so through the Copilot settings, under the "Privacy" section. Additional information is available on the GitHub blog.
