Google recently introduced a new AI dictation app, Google AI Edge Eloquent, on iOS, without much fanfare. This free application aims to compete with solutions like Wispr Flow, SuperWhisper, and Willow by offering advanced voice transcription, even without an internet connection.
Once the ASR models based on Gemma are downloaded, users can start dictating and see the transcription in real-time. The app stands out for its ability to automatically filter out filler words such as "uh" and "um," thereby enhancing the clarity of the produced text.
Among the features offered are options to transform the text into different formats, such as “Bullet Points”, “Formal”, “Short”, and “Long”. Additionally, the app allows users to disable cloud mode for entirely local processing, ensuring greater privacy. When cloud mode is enabled, it uses cloud-based Gemini models to clean up the text.
Google AI Edge Eloquent also provides the ability to import keywords and jargon from your Gmail account and add custom words. The app keeps a history of transcription sessions, allowing users to review dictated words, words per minute speed, and total word count.
Although currently available only on iOS, an Android version is mentioned in the App Store description. This version promises a “seamless Android integration”, with the ability to set the app as the default keyboard and use a floating button, similar to that of Wispr Flow, for easy access to transcription from anywhere.
With this initiative, Google is joining the growing trend of AI transcription apps, which are becoming increasingly popular as speech-to-text technologies improve.
