Google AI Overviews in France: SEO Disrupted, GEO in Focus

Google rolls out its summaries at the top of search results in France. American studies report significant declines in organic clicks, while the citations from AI Overviews only partially overlap with the top 10 of the SERP. Startups are being pushed towards a new discipline: GEO.
Partial AI–SERP Overlap and High Uncertainty in France
According to an analysis by Ahrefs based on 4 million citations, 38% of the URLs cited in the AI Overviews also appear among the top ten results on Google for the same query. This overlap rate was 76% a few months earlier. A page ranked first is included in the top three citations of an AI Overview only about half the time, and 44% of the citations come from results beyond the top 20. These figures primarily come from the American market. It is still uncertain whether the frequency of AI Overviews, click-through rates, or the correlation between traditional results and summaries will be similar in France.
Decline in Organic Clicks Observed in the United States
The presence of an AI Overview on the American version of Google Search would lead to a decrease of about 40% in organic clicks, according to an estimate published in April 2026. In 2025, Pew Research noted a relative decline of 47% in the likelihood of clicking on an organic link. Saharsh Agarwal and Ananya Sen observed a decline close to 40% in outgoing organic clicks and a 34.5% increase in no-click searches, while sponsored clicks remained stable. In France, companies fear these effects may be replicated.

Effects on Businesses Based on Query Type
AI Overviews primarily appear on informational and explanatory queries. Searches with commercial or transactional intent seem less affected. Google reserves these summaries for queries deemed sufficiently precise or complex. The decline in organic click-through rates may have a more pronounced impact on growing small businesses than on large brands.
What the User Sees: Summary Box and AI Mode
At the top of the results page, a box provides a synthesized answer, sometimes accompanied by links to sources. The user can stop at this summary, click on a cited link, or switch to AI Mode to continue the search in a conversational format, in an interface similar to those of ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity. Google thus allows a transition to conversational search from the AI Overviews.
Evolving Priorities: From SEO to GEO for Startups
AI Overviews have been available in France since July 22, 2026, following a gradual rollout that began in the United States in May 2024, with France being one of the last markets affected due to a dispute over neighboring rights for the press. Visibility is no longer limited to obtaining clicks: the challenge now is to be cited in AI summaries, which is the goal of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Traditional organic SEO remains useful but is no longer sufficient on its own to appear in these summaries. Andrea Bensaid, founder of Eskimoz and 199 Ventures, believes that startups need to rethink their visibility strategy. He argues that the generative AI ecosystem values authority, expertise, and coherence in the informational journey. He suggests that while large companies retain advantages, challengers can now gain visibility in AI summaries, as the model based on organic traffic acquisition is being challenged by the rise of no-click searches.
