Google Assistant Disappears in 2026, Gemini Takes Over
Google will discontinue Google Assistant on Android and Wear OS starting September 4, 2026. The company has informed existing users via email that Gemini, its AI-powered successor, will take over assistant functions on Android. This shutdown affects smartphones, tablets, Wear OS watches, earbuds, and vehicles using Android Auto. Google specifies that Assistant will remain available for now in cars with "Google built-in."
The rollout may take a few weeks before reaching all users, and after that, Assistant will no longer function, with no option to revert. The shutdown was initially scheduled for 2025, but has been pushed back to 2026, according to 9to5Google. Gemini will also be available on Google TV, Google Home speakers, and smart displays.
This decision makes sense, but it also represents a true test of whether a general-purpose AI system like Gemini can match the reliability of the former deterministic Assistant for simple everyday commands, such as controlling smart home devices or performing basic tasks on the phone. Google's phone assistant could just as easily be disrupted by the peculiarities of probability-based language models.
