Google Leverages AI to Boost Its Search Operations
Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet, recently highlighted the significant impact of artificial intelligence on Google's search business. According to him, AI-based tools have played a crucial role in increasing search queries, contributing to a notable 17% rise in revenue from this activity.
However, this growth comes with concerns for content publishers. They have observed a decline in their search traffic, a consequence of Google's new AI integrations. Despite these worries, the company assures that its search function is far from declining and continues to thrive.
AI Features at the Heart of Google's Strategy
During a conference call regarding the company's financial results, Sundar Pichai emphasized the importance of AI features such as AI Snapshots and AI Mode. These tools have been identified as drivers of growth in search queries on Google.
A striking example of this trend was observed during the FIFA World Cup, which took place from June until last Sunday. Pichai, a football enthusiast, expressed his satisfaction in seeing that search usage reached record levels during this global event. "This shows how much people turn to Google in important moments," he stated.
One Billion Users for AI Mode
Since its global launch last October, Google's AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly active users. This tool has contributed to a gradual increase in search queries and allows Google to generate billions of clicks to websites each week through its AI features.
Pichai also revealed that the company recorded a 17% growth in search revenue thanks to these innovations, and that Google is striving to make search even more "useful and intuitive."
A Financial Pillar for Google
Search remains one of the main revenue drivers for Google. In Alphabet's last quarter, it was the third most lucrative product, behind advertising and Google services.
The financial results announced on Wednesday revealed a revenue of $119.8 billion for the last quarter, marking a 24% increase compared to the previous year. However, the company's stock experienced a slight decline of 1.24% at market close.
Publishers' Concerns Regarding AI
Sundar Pichai's statements contrast with the fears expressed by many content publishers. The increasing integration of AI into Google's search engine has raised concerns about declining traffic to their sites.
Many media outlets and publishers have reported a drop in their audience, as users seem increasingly satisfied with the answers provided directly by AI, without being redirected to the original sources. This situation raises questions about the visibility and viability of online content in an AI-dominated digital landscape.
