Google DeepMind: 4 AIs Complete Minecraft in 27 Hours

Four autonomous agents based on Gemini 4 Argon have completed Minecraft without specific human assistance in 27 hours. Google claims a complete first with Mineflayer alone, at the cost of a very large number of attempts and an announced operational budget.
Google Claims a Complete First with Mineflayer Alone
Researchers at Google assert that they have achieved the first fully autonomous resolution of Minecraft by AI agents, using only the standard Mineflayer library, without pre-explored world seeds or specific tools designed by humans. The team of agents defeated the Ender Dragon in 27 hours. To carry out this experiment, Google indicates a cost of up to $1,620, or approximately €1,444.5.
A Team of Four Coordinated Agents and One Observer
Four agents were launched into a randomly generated world, in easy mode, with the mission of defeating the Ender Dragon. Each agent controlled a character via Mineflayer, without a strategy provided by the researchers, but with shared memory and the ability to communicate via chat. The team organized itself into distinct roles: crafting tools and equipment, gathering food and managing chests, exploring, and preparing to activate the portal to the End. A fifth agent, The Observer, monitored the game without participating, checked for cheating, and provided reports. The agents exchanged coordinates, findings, and advice, alerted each other to dangers, and retrieved equipment after a teammate's death.

Measured Performance: 605 Deaths, 2,783 Programs, and 229 Messages
During the experiment, the agents experienced 605 deaths, exchanged 229 messages, and launched 2,783 programs to achieve their goal. The 27 hours required are significantly longer than the best times achieved by humans, who take only a few minutes to defeat the Ender Dragon. The majority of the time was spent battling the final boss, a challenging task for agents playing Minecraft for the first time. The researchers also emphasize that this experiment highlights Gemini 4 Argon as a significant advancement in the field of AI.
