Google Expands Gemini to New Regions
Google recently announced the expansion of its artificial intelligence tool, Gemini, in the Chrome browser to several new regions, including India, Canada, and New Zealand. This integration allows users to access Gemini via a sidebar on the desktop version of Chrome. With this feature, users can ask Google's AI questions about the content displayed on the screen, obtain information from services such as Gmail, Keep, Drive, and YouTube, and even compare content across different tabs.
Expanded Language Support
As part of this rollout, Gemini is also expanding its language support to include several Indian languages, such as Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil, in addition to English and other languages already supported by Chrome. This initiative aims to make the tool more accessible to a diverse audience in India.
History and Features of Gemini
Gemini was initially introduced in Chrome in the United States last September, in the form of a floating window. Earlier this year, Google presented tools based on a sidebar, offering a more integrated interface. Users benefiting from this feature will see a "Ask Gemini" icon on the tab bar, which they can activate to ask questions, summarize content, or create a quiz to better understand a topic. Gemini is capable of operating across multiple tabs, allowing users to compare information, such as articles to purchase or travel options.
Integration with Other Google Tools
Gemini is not limited to simple interaction with tab content. It can connect to various Google tools to provide more personalized responses. For example, users can compose an email directly from the Chrome sidebar and send it without leaving the window. Additionally, Gemini can summarize YouTube videos, providing key points with timestamps, and even schedule meetings or inform users of their daily schedules by connecting to Gmail, Maps, Calendar, and other applications.
Use of Generative AI with Nano Banana 2
Users can also take advantage of Google's generative AI tool, Nano Banana 2, directly within Gemini for Chrome. This tool allows users to transform images, such as visualizing how a piece of furniture might fit in a room by uploading a photo of their space.
Deployment on iOS and Limitations
In addition to the desktop version, Google is also rolling out Gemini support in Chrome for iOS in India. When available, the option will appear in the address bar as a page tools icon. In January, Google launched enhanced agentic capabilities for users based in the United States with an AI Pro and AI Ultra subscription. These capabilities can take control of your browser and perform tasks on your behalf. However, these features will not be included in this rollout for India, New Zealand, and Canada.
