Google has recently expanded the capabilities of its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) by introducing advanced features to enhance the online shopping experience through artificial intelligence. These new features include a cart system, a real-time catalog, and identity management for loyalty programs.
The cart feature now allows AI agents to simultaneously add multiple items to an online store's cart, simplifying the purchasing process. Additionally, the new catalog option provides agents with direct access to updated product data, such as prices, variants, and availability, directly from the retailer.
Furthermore, through an identity link, shoppers connected via UCP platforms can enjoy the same loyalty and membership benefits as if they were shopping directly with the retailer.
Google plans to integrate these UCP enhancements into the AI Mode of its search as well as in the Gemini app. The Merchant Center will play a key role in facilitating access for small merchants to these advanced tools. Partner companies such as Commerce Inc, Salesforce, and Stripe have already expressed their intention to support the UCP on their platforms.
The UCP was initially launched earlier this year in partnership with commerce giants like Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, Walmart, as well as over 20 other companies, including Visa and Zalando. This open protocol aims to standardize and energize AI-powered online shopping.
