Google and A24: A Partnership for the Future of Cinema
Google recently announced a significant investment of $75 million in the independent film studio A24. This strategic partnership also involves DeepMind, Google's artificial intelligence branch, which will work with A24 to develop new AI tools aimed at transforming film production and distribution. This initiative marks a new step in the integration of AI within the film industry, a sector where technology evokes both fascination and skepticism.
For several years, Hollywood and AI have maintained a complex relationship, marked by tensions and heated debates. Lawsuits, cease-and-desist letters, and public criticisms from directors reflect the ongoing concern about the growing influence of digital technologies. It is in this climate of distrust that Google has chosen to partner with A24, a New York-based studio that has established itself as a key player with successes like Backrooms. This partnership stands out from typical collaborations between tech and cinema by betting on an innovative approach.
An Unprecedented Investment by Google in Cinema
Google's injection of $75 million into A24 is a first for the search giant, which has never before invested directly in a film studio. This amount is comparable to that committed by Thrive Capital during a previous funding round in 2024, which valued A24 at $3.5 billion. The agreement between Google and A24 is multi-year and non-exclusive, meaning that Google will not have access to the studio's library of films and series.
On the technological front, DeepMind will be responsible for driving the development of AI tools. A24, for its part, will rely on A24 Labs, a team of about twenty people led by Scott Belsky, a former Adobe executive. This team is already working on innovative applications, such as AI-generated storyboards, which allow for visualizing and anticipating potential challenges before filming.
Scott Belsky emphasizes that A24's approach differs from that of other tech companies. According to him, the tools developed will preserve the creative control of filmmakers and encourage risk-taking. He clarifies that these technologies will not be similar to the automated generation AIs that often raise concerns. The goal is to use AI to support artistic creation rather than to reduce production costs.
AI in Service of the Elden Ring Adaptation
The alliance between Google and A24 represents a bold bet for the studio, which has built its reputation by supporting emerging filmmakers and appealing to a young audience that is often critical of large tech companies. Despite this, A24 is in full expansion, with revenue doubling in two years thanks to more ambitious productions and diversification into sectors like unscripted television, music, and theater.
Currently, A24 is working on its most ambitious project to date: a film adaptation of the video game Elden Ring, with an estimated budget of $175 million. This film will be directed by Alex Garland, known for his innovative works. In parallel, the studio is exploring partnerships with international investors to finance projects outside the United States.
In a context where Hollywood is still trying to adapt to AI, the partnership between A24 and Google could well demonstrate that technology can be an ally of creativity rather than a threat. The results of this collaboration will be closely monitored by the industry.
