Google Makes a Colossal Investment Commitment
Google has decided to make a bold bet by investing up to $40 billion in Anthropic, a company specializing in artificial intelligence. According to Bloomberg, this investment breaks down into an initial tranche of $10 billion immediately, based on an impressive valuation of $350 billion for Anthropic. If the company meets certain performance milestones, Google could add an additional $30 billion.
The Mythos Model and Its Implications
Anthropic recently unveiled its most advanced artificial intelligence model, named Mythos, to a select group of partners. This model is touted to have significant capabilities, particularly in the field of cybersecurity. However, due to potential abuse risks, access to Mythos remains limited. Anthropic is collaborating with selected organizations to assess and mitigate these risks, although the model has already been compromised by malicious uses. Furthermore, the large-scale deployment of Mythos could prove costly.
The Race for Computing Power
In the current landscape, the race for artificial intelligence is heavily influenced by access to powerful computing resources. OpenAI, for instance, has taken aggressive steps to secure these resources, establishing agreements worth several hundred billion dollars with cloud, chip, and energy providers. An expanded partnership with chip manufacturer Cerebras was finalized this month.
Anthropic and Its Strategic Partnerships
Anthropic is not lagging behind, having recently faced criticism regarding the limitations of its Claude model. To address these challenges, the company has signed several infrastructure agreements. A partnership with cloud provider CoreWeave has been established to enhance its data center capacity. Additionally, Anthropic secured a $5 billion investment from Amazon, with a commitment to invest up to $100 billion to acquire approximately 5 gigawatts of long-term computing capacity.
Google, an Essential Partner for Anthropic
Although Google is a direct competitor in the AI model space, it also plays a crucial role as an infrastructure provider for Anthropic. The company heavily relies on Google Cloud for its chip and infrastructure needs, particularly through Google's tensor processing units (or TPUs). These specialized chips are essential for AI workloads and represent a preferred alternative to the highly sought-after processors from Nvidia.
An Intensifying Partnership
The collaboration between Anthropic and Google is not new. Earlier this month, Anthropic announced a partnership with Google and chip manufacturer Broadcom. This partnership aims to provide several gigawatts of TPU-based computing capacity by 2027. A securities filing from Broadcom specified this figure at 3.5 gigawatts.
A Promising Future for Anthropic
Google's new investment expands this agreement, with Google Cloud committing to provide an additional 5 gigawatts of capacity over the next five years, with the possibility of a future extension. In February, Anthropic was valued at $350 billion, but investors are now willing to support the company at a valuation of $800 billion or more. Anthropic is also considering a potential IPO as early as October.
