Google Strengthens Its Grip on AI with $40 Billion for Anthropic

Google has announced a massive investment of up to $40 billion in Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company and competitor to ChatGPT. According to Bloomberg, this financial commitment is divided into two parts: $10 billion based on Anthropic's current valuation, which stands at $380 billion, and an additional $30 billion contingent on meeting specific performance targets.

This new agreement extends an already well-established partnership between Google and Anthropic. Since 2023, Google has injected over $3 billion into the company and currently holds about 14% of its shares, as reported by the New York Times. Furthermore, Anthropic recently secured 5 gigawatts of computing capacity through an agreement with Google and Broadcom, thereby enhancing its technical capabilities.

Additionally, Amazon has also expressed interest in Anthropic by committing to invest up to $25 billion more. This investment momentum is justified by Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, who highlights the growing demand for their AI model, Claude. The company currently boasts annual recurring revenues exceeding $30 billion and is considering an initial public offering in the near future.
