Google Labs has launched Playground, an AI tool that generates playable games in a browser from text instructions. Access is currently limited to adults in the United States, with a token usage model and benefits for Google One AI subscribers. An integration with Unity Spark has been announced, while other platforms, such as Roblox, are also advancing in natural language creation.
Limited Access in the United States and Token Model
Playground is primarily accessible to users aged 18 and older residing in the United States. Google plans to expand availability to other countries in the future. Exploring the catalog and playing games is free, but game creation operates on a weekly token system. The free tier grants a limited number of tokens, while Google One AI subscribers enjoy higher usage quotas.
Creation via Text Commands and Publishing Options
The platform allows users to design browser games from simple text instructions, without requiring programming skills. Users can choose a genre such as trivia or racing, opt for a 2D or 3D game, and select solo or multiplayer modes. They describe the desired mechanics, gameplay, and visual style. It is also possible to import visuals, which the AI adapts to the project's artistic style. The created games are playable on mobile and desktop. Projects can remain private, be shared via link, or published in the Explore gallery, with features like leaderboards. Creators can continue to modify their games after publication.
Unity Spark Integration Announced
Google intends to include Unity Spark integration in a future update. This change would allow users to benefit from additional 3D features as well as professional-level gameplay mechanics made possible by Unity technology.
A Broader Movement in AI-Assisted Gaming
In July, Roblox introduced Build, a feature that allows users to create games from natural language commands. Google has long been interested in the gaming sector, having launched Stadia for cloud gaming in 2022, and also offers instantly playable web games via YouTube Playables. The launch of Playground by Google Labs is part of a trend where AI makes game creation more accessible to an audience without traditional technical skills.
