Google Maps Gains New Proactive Features
Google recently unveiled a series of new features for its Google Maps application, aimed at enhancing the user experience beyond simple navigation. Among these innovations, the ability to order food, book hotels, and purchase tickets for events stands out. These additions are part of a broader strategy by Google to transform Google Maps into a true personal assistant. The integration of Personal Intelligence into the Ask Maps feature allows the application to provide personalized responses using information from users' Gmail and Google Calendar accounts.
Towards a Complete Personal Assistant
The introduction of these features marks a significant step in the evolution of Google Maps. The app, once limited to navigation, is transforming into a tool capable of assisting users with various everyday tasks. By allowing users to ask specific questions, such as searching for a particular dish nearby, Google Maps displays nearby restaurants that meet these criteria. Once the restaurant is chosen, the user can place an order directly through partner platforms like Square, Toast, or Uber Eats, thus simplifying the ordering process.
Simplified Hotel Reservations
Regarding travel, Ask Maps makes it easier to search for and book hotels. Users can formulate detailed queries, for example, to find a hotel in Miami for a conference, specifying criteria such as price, proximity to amenities, or desired ambiance. The tool then compares prices and availability, offering a list of options to choose from. Once the selection is made, the user is redirected to the partner's site to finalize the booking.
Purchasing Tickets for Events
Google Maps doesn't stop there; it also helps users find cultural or musical events nearby. By asking about comedy shows or live music, users receive a list of options with direct links to purchase tickets, making outing planning smoother.
Deployment in the United States and Increased Personalization
These new features are currently being rolled out to users in the United States. Personal Intelligence, which is disabled by default, allows Ask Maps to provide even more personalized responses by accessing the user's email and calendar information. For instance, the app can inform users about the arrival time of a flight to Vancouver or suggest restaurants and activities near a hotel.
Conversation Tracking and Live Transport
Another major advancement is Ask Maps' ability to remember previous conversations, allowing users to pick up their searches where they left off. This greatly simplifies travel or activity planning. Additionally, Google is introducing a live transport widget, providing real-time updates on delays and transport conditions, which is particularly useful for daily commutes.
Global Availability
Personal Intelligence and the live transport widget are being gradually rolled out across all markets where Ask Maps is available, further enhancing the utility of Google Maps as a multifunctional and customizable tool for users worldwide.
