Google has recently unveiled a major advancement for its mapping application, Google Maps, by introducing an innovative feature called “Ask Maps.” This new option, powered by artificial intelligence Gemini, allows users to ask complex questions in natural language. For example, a user might ask: “Where can I quickly charge my phone without waiting too long for a coffee?” or “Is there a public tennis court with lights to play tonight?” These queries demonstrate the app's ability to understand and respond to nuanced questions about the real world.

In addition to answering specific questions, “Ask Maps” proves to be a valuable tool for trip planning. For instance, a user considering a visit to the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Coral Dunes could request recommendations for stops along the way. Google Maps would then provide detailed routes, estimated travel times, and practical tips from other users, such as discovering hidden trails or obtaining free tickets.

Personalization and Availability of 'Ask Maps'

The “Ask Maps” feature is designed to offer personalized responses based on the user's preferences and history. For example, if a user is looking for a restaurant for dinner with friends, the app might suggest vegan options if it knows that the user prefers this type of cuisine. This personalization is made possible by data from previously searched or saved locations by the user.

Currently, “Ask Maps” is being rolled out in the United States and India, accessible on Android and iOS devices. Google has also announced that this feature will soon be available on computers, thus expanding its accessibility.

Immersive Navigation for an Enhanced Experience

Meanwhile, Google Maps has improved its immersive navigation feature, now offering a 3D view that incorporates elements such as buildings, overpasses, and the surrounding terrain. This visual update draws inspiration from similar features available on Apple Maps. Users will also benefit from enriched road details, including lanes, crosswalks, and traffic lights.

Beyond the visual aspect, Google has introduced practical enhancements for drivers. For example, the app now uses smart zooms and transparent buildings to help users anticipate complex turns and lane changes. The voice guidance has also been revamped to provide more natural instructions, such as: “Take this exit and the next one for Illinois 43 South.”

Anticipation and Real-Time Information

Google Maps does not stop at improving visual and voice navigation. The app also provides real-time information about potential disruptions along the route, such as road work or accidents. This data comes from the Google Maps and Waze communities, ensuring constant updates of information.

Maps will also explain trade-offs for alternative routes, such as a longer trip with less traffic or a faster route that includes a toll. Even before departing, users can preview their destination and its surroundings through Street View images. The app also provides recommendations on parking options and indicates the building entrance and which side of the street to prioritize.

Transforming the Driving Experience

During a briefing with journalists, Miriam Daniel, Vice President of Google Maps, emphasized the team's goal: to transform the driving experience by eliminating uncertainties. The immersive navigation is described as a complete overhaul of the user experience, with reimagined visuals and real-time updated information.

The new immersive navigation is being rolled out in the United States and will gradually be available on iOS and Android devices, as well as on CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles integrating Google.

This announcement follows the integration of Gemini into Google Maps at the end of last year. This integration allows the AI assistant to answer questions about locations along a route, provide information on topics like sports or news, and add events to a calendar. Gemini is also used with Street View to enhance navigation instructions by referencing nearby landmarks such as gas stations, restaurants, or famous buildings, rather than just simple distances.
