Ask Maps: A Refined Understanding of Queries
With Ask Maps, Google Maps goes beyond simple keyword searches. The tool is now capable of understanding very specific requests, allowing users to describe a situation as if they were speaking to a personal assistant. For example, if you are looking for a vegetarian restaurant located between two specific neighborhoods, with a particular ambiance and at a certain time, the AI takes all these criteria into account to identify the most appropriate places.
According to Google's blog, the queries can be even more varied. You can ask where to charge a phone or find a public tennis court in a given area. Ask Maps is designed to understand these questions effortlessly and provide relevant answers based on your searches.
To offer this level of precision, the system relies on numerous internal information sources. User reviews, photos, and business listings are analyzed by the algorithm. Gemini can detect the ambiance of a restaurant or estimate the crowd level of a location, allowing for highly targeted recommendations. This precision is the result of combining Google Maps' comprehensive mapping database with Gemini's advanced models.
Personalization Based on History
Ask Maps does not just provide generic answers. The suggestions are also personalized based on the user's habits. The places saved in the app and past searches influence the recommendations offered.
However, Google has set clear boundaries. The responses generated by Gemini are based solely on the data present in Google Maps, without consulting other Google applications like Gmail. This was clarified by Miriam Daniel, Vice President and General Manager of Google Maps.
Searches conducted in Google Search related to locations can still influence the suggestions. Addresses saved in Maps or added to lists may also appear in the responses. The goal is to provide relevant recommendations while remaining within the mapping ecosystem.
Moreover, this evolution is not limited to suggesting places. Ask Maps transforms results into concrete actions. For example, if a restaurant matches your request, you can directly book a table from the provided response. This approach reduces the number of steps in the user journey, saving valuable time when searching for results.
Enhanced Visual Navigation Thanks to Gemini
The arrival of Gemini in Google Maps is not limited to improving searches. Google also announces a major evolution in the navigation interface. This new experience, called immersive navigation, offers a more realistic representation of the environment.
Buildings now appear in detailed 3D, and elevated roads, terrain, and vegetation are visible. According to The Verge, this is the largest update to Google Maps in ten years. The virtual camera adjusts its position during the journey, automatically zooming in to display crucial information. Drivers can thus see lanes, traffic lights, or crosswalks before making a maneuver.
The new interface also emphasizes understanding the proposed routes. Google explains why a road is considered the best option by analyzing multiple sources of information such as real-time traffic data. User contributions reporting accidents or construction complement these analyses.
Once the destination is reached, the app continues to assist the user by indicating nearby parking areas and suggesting walking routes if necessary.
Gradual Rollout of the New Feature
The rollout of this new feature begins this week, with the United States and India as the first testing grounds. The function will initially be available on Android and iOS. For those who prefer to use Google Maps on a computer, a bit more patience will be required to see the desktop version.
As for immersive navigation, it will also start in the United States, with a gradual rollout to other regions to follow.
This feature will be integrated into various environments, appearing on smartphones as well as in vehicles compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Some cars equipped with Google integration will also benefit from it.
