Google recently announced the introduction of new features for Google Maps, aimed at facilitating user contributions. Among these innovations, the integration of Gemini artificial intelligence stands out for its ability to generate captions for photos and videos that users wish to share.
When a user selects images to share, Gemini analyzes them to propose automatic captions. Users then have the option to modify or delete these suggestions. This feature, currently available in English on iOS in the United States, is expected to expand to other languages and platforms, including Android, in the coming months.
In addition to this feature, Google Maps simplifies the search and sharing of photos and videos. By enabling media access in their phone settings, users can see their recent visual experiences directly in the "Contribute" tab and easily publish them.
Google emphasizes that shared photos and videos help users better understand locations by providing insights into the atmosphere or recent menus. Visual content recommendations are now globally accessible on iOS and Android.
Furthermore, Google is enhancing the tracking of the impact of user contributions. The total points earned are now visible in the "Contribute" tab, and "Local Guide" levels are highlighted on profiles. Achievement badges have been updated to more easily identify fact-checking experts, master photographers, or budding novices. High-level contributors are also showcased with new gold-colored profiles.
These innovations aim to support the vast Google Maps community, which boasts over 500 million contributors. By simplifying the contribution process, Google hopes to maintain up-to-date and accurate information on its platform.
