Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and xAI, Elon Musk's company, have made a significant decision by agreeing to allow the U.S. government to review their new artificial intelligence models before they hit the market. This initiative was announced on Tuesday by the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) of the Department of Commerce, which will collaborate with these companies to conduct pre-deployment assessments and targeted research. The goal is to better understand and evaluate the capabilities of cutting-edge AI technologies.
Since 2024, CAISI has already conducted 40 assessments of models developed by OpenAI and Anthropic. These companies have renegotiated their partnerships with the center to align with the priorities of President Donald Trump's AI Action Plan. This move demonstrates a willingness to adapt existing collaborations to new regulatory requirements.
Furthermore, the White House may strengthen these evaluations. According to a report from the New York Times, President Trump is considering an executive order that would bring together leaders from the tech sector and government officials to oversee new AI models. This measure aims to ensure closer oversight of technological developments.
Chris Fall, director of CAISI, emphasized the importance of this initiative in a statement: “An independent and rigorous measurement science is essential to understand cutting-edge AI and its implications for national security. These expanded collaborations with industry help us extend our public interest work at a critical time.”
