Google Photos is set to transform the way we interact with our clothing through a new feature powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Announced on Wednesday, this innovation will allow users to create a digital wardrobe from their clothing photos, inspired by Cher's famous virtual closet in the movie "Clueless."
Google Photos' AI technology will automatically generate a digital copy of your wardrobe by analyzing the clothing present in your photo library. Users will then be able to sort these items by categories, such as tops, bottoms, or accessories, and mix and match them to envision new outfits.
This feature goes beyond simple organization. It also offers the ability to share outfit ideas with friends or save them on a digital mood board. The latter can be used to plan outfits for various occasions, ranging from trips to professional events.
In addition to this, Google Photos will offer a virtual try-on option, allowing users to preview their looks before adopting them. Although the feature is not yet available, Google has announced its launch on Android this summer, followed by a version for iOS. It will be accessible under the "Collections" tab.
This new offering puts Google in direct competition with existing apps such as Acloset, Combyne, Pureple, Whering, and Alta. While Google has not detailed the precise workings of the AI, it is expected to identify clothing and accessories in photos to create individual snapshots. For optimal results, it is recommended to photograph clothing in good lighting conditions, much like Cher in "Clueless."
