Google Search: Nano Banana 2 Lite Generates AI Images
Google is now integrating AI image generation directly into the AI previews of Search. When no matching image is found on the web, users can generate one by entering a text prompt in the search bar. This feature relies on Google's new image model, "Nano Banana 2 Lite," which prioritizes speed and cost over quality.
The rollout will begin in the coming weeks in English, across all regions already compatible with AI image generation. For the open web, this likely means fewer clicks. Image search continues to draw some traffic to external sites, and AI-generated results encroach on that. This marks a new step in transforming Google into an AI-driven search experience that keeps users on Google.
Google Images is also benefiting from a revamped homepage featuring a dynamic gallery that pulls content from the web in real-time, tailored to each user's interests. Users can save images into collections that appear as tabs above the gallery. The new homepage will be rolled out in the coming weeks, starting with English on desktop in the United States. A Google account is required.
