Google Search Transforms with AI
At the Google I/O 2026 conference, Google announced major changes to its search engine, integrating significant advancements in artificial intelligence. The new search bar, powered by the Gemini 3.5 Flash model, allows for a seamless transition between AI Overviews and AI Mode. These AI-generated summaries now appear at the top of search results, facilitating interaction with the engine.
The updated search bar expands for longer queries and introduces a new AI-powered autocomplete feature, enriching the questions posed by users. Robby Stein, Google’s Vice President of Product for Search, clarified that users can expect to see these AI Overviews when they ask questions in natural language. Follow-up queries within an AI Overview redirect to AI Mode, where users can add documents, photos, videos, and Chrome tabs to enhance their search.
A Simplified User Experience
Liz Reid, Vice President of Google Search, emphasized the goal of reducing "friction" between different search experiences. "We are really working to make this much smoother and simplified, so that for most users, they don’t have to think about where to go, they can just go to the search bar they know and feel like they’re getting the best experience afterward," she stated. The updated search bar will be available globally on desktop and mobile devices starting Tuesday, with the option to revert to traditional results via the "Web" tab.
AI Information Agents and New Features
This summer, Google will introduce AI information agents for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. These agents will be able to monitor topics in the background and notify users of updates, even when they are offline. For example, they can track the tours of a favorite music group and inform users of upcoming concerts. "You could be asleep, and it’s out there searching, finding information, doing tasks for you," explained Stein.
The AI agents will also be able to connect to other Google accounts through Personal Intelligence, allowing them to extract information from apps like Gmail to personalize their responses. Updates will include text, links, and videos, similar to the responses obtained in AI Mode.
Towards a More Interactive and Personalized Search
Google plans to expand its automatic booking capabilities, allowing users to schedule local services such as grooming appointments, beauty salon visits, or home repair services. This feature may even call certain businesses on your behalf. Additionally, a new generative user interface feature will enable the creation of custom widgets and applications directly within the search engine.
Google's AI Overviews can now code interactive visualizations, such as a diagram showing how a black hole works, and include them in their responses. Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will be able to create super apps within search, such as a home fitness tracker, and connect it to real-time information like weather and your calendar. "This is really the next generation of what it means to be Search," Stein stated, highlighting the increased accessibility and ease of use of AI for everyone.
