Google recently announced the beta rollout of new features for its AI assistant, Gemini, within Google Workspace. These updates are specifically aimed at subscribers of the AI Ultra and Pro plans. The primary goal of this initiative is to integrate artificial intelligence directly into Google's productivity tools, thereby eliminating the need for users to rely on external applications. This strategy aims to create a smoother and more integrated user experience.
New AI Capabilities in Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive
Google has applied a uniform approach across all its productivity tools. The idea is to enable the Gemini assistant to generate, organize, and retrieve content by leveraging files stored in Google Drive, Gmail emails, and information available on the web. This integration aims to optimize user efficiency by centralizing the resources needed for content creation.
Google Docs: From Blank Page to Final Draft
In Google Docs, Gemini now features a prompt bar located at the bottom of the interface. This functionality allows users to describe the type of document they wish to create. The assistant then generates an initial draft based on Drive files, Gmail emails, and web data. Two editing options enhance this feature: Match writing style, which harmonizes the document's tone, and Match doc format, which aligns the document's structure with that of an existing template.
Google Sheets: Spreadsheets Generated via a Prompt
Gemini also offers the ability to create complete spreadsheets from a simple prompt. This feature includes the generation of tables, dashboards, and formatting. Additionally, the Fill with Gemini option allows for the automatic filling of entire columns, using either data from the file or real-time information from Google Search. This innovation aims to simplify and accelerate the spreadsheet creation process.
Google Slides: Faster Slide Creation
In Google Slides, it is now possible to ask Gemini to generate a new slide that aligns with the theme of the current deck. This feature utilizes files, emails, or web data to create slides. Natural language editing is also available, allowing for adjustments in style, color, or tone directly through a prompt. Although the complete generation of presentations from a single prompt has been announced, it is not yet available.
Google Drive: Intelligent File Search
Google Drive integrates a new feature called AI Overview, which provides a summary of relevant information based on stored files. Gemini also offers the option Ask Gemini in Drive, allowing users to pose complex questions by cross-referencing documents, emails, calendars, and web searches. However, this feature is currently limited to users located in the United States.
Availability of New Features
The new features for Docs, Sheets, and Slides are available in English worldwide. However, the Ask Gemini in Drive feature is currently restricted to the United States. All these innovations are accessible only to subscribers of the Google AI Ultra and Pro plans.
Accelerated Integration within the Google Ecosystem
These announcements are part of a broader strategy by Google to systematically integrate Gemini into all its services. Recently, the assistant was integrated into Google Meet with the Ask Gemini feature, and into enterprise offerings via Gemini Enterprise. Google's goal is to make Gemini a central element of its ecosystem, linking files, meetings, and messaging. It remains to be seen whether this multitude of features will lead to widespread adoption beyond the initial beta users.
