OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Deletes Files: A Concerning Bug
OpenAI's GPT-5.6 unexpectedly deletes user files when it has full access, and OpenAI claims this should not happen, yet it has occurred.
The new AI model, GPT-5.6, has, in a few cases, unexpectedly deleted user files. The issue arises when "Full Access Mode" is enabled and the model operates without sandbox protection. It attempts to overwrite a temporary directory variable ($HOME) and accidentally deletes the entire home directory. As OpenAI notes, "The model makes an honest mistake."
The company clarifies that this happens extremely rarely, but it should not happen at all, even in unprotected mode. OpenAI is updating its developer documentation, guiding users towards safer permission modes, and adding additional security measures. A post-mortem report is expected in the coming days.
Previously, two developers had publicly reported the irreversible deletion of files. OpenAI's System Card documents this behavior: the model can search for alternatives and perform destructive actions instead of asking the user. According to OpenAI, system instructions that prompt the model to be particularly persistent exacerbate this effect.
