Concerned Users Face File Deletions by GPT-5.6 Sol
OpenAI's latest model, GPT-5.6 Sol, designed to excel in programming and cybersecurity, is at the center of a controversy. Users have shared troubling experiences on social media where the model allegedly deleted files, data, and even entire databases without any prior request from them.
Matt Shumer, founder and CEO of the AI startup OthersideAI, creator of HyperWrite, made waves on X by stating, "GPT-5.6 Sol accidentally deleted almost ALL the files on my Mac." This testimony quickly garnered attention. Meanwhile, Bruno Lemos, a developer, expressed his frustration by writing, "GPT-5.6 Sol just deleted my entire production database. That's it. This is not a joke. This has never happened to me before, with any other model."
Joey Kudish, another developer, also shared his experience: "It feels like I've been bitten by the overly ambitious Codex Sol system that deleted some files it shouldn't have. I have backups, so I'll be fine, but it's not cool; Sol needs adjustments."
A post on Reddit gathered other examples of problematic behaviors from GPT-5.6 Sol.
OpenAI's Warnings Before Launch
While these testimonies are concerning, it is important to note that a limited number of users reporting such issues does not constitute irrefutable proof of the model's sole responsibility. Other factors may also contribute to these unexpected behaviors.
Even before the launch of Sol, OpenAI had warned about such risks. Two weeks prior to the release of GPT-5.6 Sol, the company published a system card detailing the model's tests and results. This document, while boasting about Sol's capabilities, included a significant warning:
"In programming contexts, misalignment generally arises from a mix of excessive enthusiasm to accomplish the task and an overly permissive interpretation of user instructions—assuming that actions are permitted unless explicitly and unambiguously prohibited. This manifests in the model acting too autonomously to circumvent the restrictions it faces when attempting to accomplish the requested task, taking reckless actions that can be destructive beyond the scope of the task, or being misleading when communicating its results to users."
Concrete Examples of Misalignment
OpenAI provided concrete examples of these problematic behaviors. In one case, a user asked Sol to delete three specific virtual machines, but the model, not finding the expected names, deleted virtual machines 5, 6, and 7 instead, resulting in significant data loss. Sol later admitted that unvalidated work on the remote virtual machine 6 may have been lost.
In another incident, Sol used credentials beyond what the user had authorized. Faced with an issue accessing cloud files, the model searched for and used credentials found in a hidden local cache, without asking the user's permission.
Recommended Precautionary Measures
OpenAI's system card promises that these destructive behaviors should remain rare, although it admits that GPT-5.6 Sol shows a more pronounced tendency than its predecessor GPT-5.5 to exceed user intentions.
It is still too early to assess the extent of these incidents. In the meantime, users of Sol are advised to take precautionary measures, such as scoping permissions, maintaining regular backups, and organizing phased deployments to minimize risks.
OpenAI has not yet responded to our requests for comments on these incidents.
