In the ever-evolving world of music technology, startups like Suno and Udio have already made headlines by using artificial intelligence to generate music. However, a newcomer, GRAI, offers a different vision. The company firmly believes that most people do not want AI to create music from scratch. Instead, they prefer activities such as remixing existing tracks, sharing with friends, or experimenting with musical styles for the sheer joy of discovery.
This approach raises a crucial question: how far is an artist willing to let others play with their creations? The final decision must, of course, rest with the artists themselves.
GRAI and Its Funding Model
With $9 million in funding, the music lab GRAI aims to give control back to artists while harnessing the power of AI to transform how consumers interact with music. Founded by Belarusian entrepreneurs who previously sold their video creation app VOCHI to Pinterest, GRAI is exploring new AI-based music products. Among these innovations are the remixing app Music with Friends for iOS and another music platform for Android. These tools aim to understand how consumers want to engage with music, beyond mere creation or AI-assisted listening.
GRAI's Vision for the Future of Music
Ilya Liasun, co-founder and CEO of GRAI, explains that the company's goal is to redefine musical interaction and consumption in the age of AI. Based in Poland, with a large part of its team, Liasun emphasizes that music is one of the last major consumption categories that has not adopted a "creator-first" approach.
The issues identified by GRAI include ineffective music discovery, passive listening, and a lack of social context. Contrary to the fears of some, Liasun does not believe that AI will replace artists and labels. On the contrary, he sees AI as an opportunity to open new ways to interact with music beyond simply creating generative melodies.
Targeting Younger Generations
GRAI focuses on users from Generation Z and Alpha, who often discover new music through culture, particularly via friends, fandoms, and short content on platforms like TikTok. These young people are not necessarily looking to become music creators or producers, but they want to participate in the musical universe in some way.
Developing Social Music Applications
To support its social applications, GRAI has developed its own taste and participation graph as well as a dedicated infrastructure. The company is building a derivative pipeline and real-time audio systems that preserve the identity of original tracks while allowing for their transformation.
Liasun clarifies that the goal is to collaborate with artists and their labels to legalize this type of activity. The idea is not to produce more unwanted AI-generated music but to focus on interaction.
A Collaborative Approach with Artists
The idea is to allow users to play with tracks in GRAI's applications, for example, by remixing a favorite melody or changing its style. These modified tracks could then generate a new source of revenue for artists and labels.
Rather than developing first and asking for permission later, GRAI engages with labels from the outset. The company aims to build a system where artists can choose whether or not to participate. This approach, which involves asking owners first before integrating, is a fundamental principle at GRAI.
Potential Impact on Music Discovery
If musical remixing becomes popular, GRAI hopes it will help people discover new artists and songs outside of major platforms like Reels, TikTok, or YouTube. With its initial applications, GRAI seeks to gather feedback from consumers, even negative ones, to refine its offerings.
Financial Support and Leadership Team
The company, co-founded by Dima Kamarouski (CTO) and Andrei Avsievich (President), has secured initial funding of $9 million. This funding round was co-led by Khosla Ventures and Inovo VC, with participation from other investors such as Tensor Ventures, Tiny.VC, Flyer One Ventures, the a16z Scout Fund, as well as various individual investors, including Andrew Zhai, Greg Tkachenko, Rob Reid, and Dima Shvets.
