What is Grok Voice Think Fast 1.0?
The Grok Voice Think Fast 1.0 model from xAI introduces a major advancement in the field of voice AI agents. Unlike traditional systems that process speech sequentially, this model integrates recognition, reasoning, and response into a single continuous loop. This enables full-duplex communication, where audio reception and production tasks occur simultaneously, providing a smoother and more natural user experience.
Most current voice AI systems operate in multiple steps: speech is converted to text, which is then processed by a language model, before the response is converted back to speech. This sequential process can lead to noticeable delays, making conversation feel less natural. In contrast, Grok Voice Think Fast 1.0 performs these tasks in parallel, allowing for true real-time communication. xAI refers to this as background reasoning, where the model can handle complex queries while continuously producing audio.
For example, as demonstrated by xAI, when you ask competing models, "What are the names of the months that are spelled with an 'X'?", they often confidently and incorrectly respond with "February." In contrast, Grok Voice Think Fast 1.0 will first determine the specific case and correctly respond that there are no months spelled with an 'X'. This accuracy is crucial for large enterprises, where mistakes can jeopardize significant contracts. Indeed, the much more dangerous and frequent activity of providing incorrect and confident answers by competing models ultimately undermines contracts.
Key Features of Grok Voice Think Fast 1.0
The key features of Grok Voice Think Fast 1.0 include:
- Instant reasoning: Background thought processes occur simultaneously without changing or slowing down response time.
- Exceptional noise prevention: The model has been trained with real phone data; therefore, even in the presence of background noise, accent variations, conversation interruptions, or other call issues, it performs exceptionally well.
- Structured data capture: We can accurately extract and format all elements (including email addresses, phone numbers) from a call, even if they have been altered by speech.
- High-volume tool usage: Parallel calls to multiple tools are possible with our solution without affecting overall performance.
- Multilingual capabilities: The model can handle over 25 different languages and will seamlessly switch languages if necessary during the same call.
- Fully developed in-house: xAI has developed the entire product (from the ground up) including the following components: Voice Activity Detection (VAD), Tokenizer, Audio Model.
Pricing: What is the actual cost?
xAI has maintained aggressive pricing:
- Voice agent (grok-voice-think-fast-1.0)
- Live conversations, tool calls
- Speech to Text: Batch - Pre-recorded transcription, over 25 languages
- Speech to Text: Streaming - Real-time transcription via WebSocket
- 5 voices, 20 languages
To provide an overview: a 10-minute support call costs $0.50 for connection. Add 20 tool calls: $0.10 more. Total: $0.60 for a complete interaction. OpenAI's Realtime API costs about $0.10/min. xAI claims to be about half the cost. The API endpoint is also compatible with OpenAI's Realtime specification, so migration does not require a complete rewrite.
Getting Started with the xAI Voice Agent Interface
You do not need to know how to write a program to design your first voice agent using the interface at console.x.ai/playground/voice/agent. The console offers you two paths to build the agent:
-
Select from various pre-built agent models such as Medical Office, Restaurant Host, Help Desk, Real Estate Agent, Appointment Setter, or Hotel Concierge, or click the + Create Custom Agent button.
-
You can customize the agent in the description provided in the text box. This description will serve as the system prompt.
-
Click Start to initiate a live voice session.
-
Use your computer's microphone to speak to your agent during the live voice session.
-
You can modify your agent's description, restart, and test your agent again.
In the background, the console automatically handles voice activity detection, audio streaming, and model selection. The console has a default voice model of grok-voice-think-fast-1.0. Additionally, five different voice options are available: Ara, Eve, Leo, Rex, and Sal. Tools such as web search can be activated from the interface without requiring an API key or standard code. You simply need to provide a description of your voice agent and speak to it.
Task 1: Sales Bot for an Agentic AI Course
We will develop a sales voice agent that will present the Agentic AI Pioneer program to potential customers. The system must identify potential customers that it will then convince to become paying clients through its sales process.
Step 1: Open the Console and Select Create Custom
Go to console.x.ai/playground/voice/agent. The pre-built models should be ignored. Click on + Create Custom, which gives you a blank canvas to define exactly how your sales agent behaves.
Step 2: Write the Agent Description
This is the most important step. The description box is your system prompt. Paste the following text into the text box:
You are a friendly sales advisor for the Agentic AI Pioneer program by Analytics Vidhya. Your goal: qualify prospects and guide them toward enrollment. Course details:
- Hands-on curriculum in agentic AI with real projects
- Live mentorship by AI practitioners
- Limited cohort size for personalized attention
- Enrollment: https://www.analyticsvidhya.com/agenticaipioneer/
Conversation flow:
- Warmly welcome. Ask what they do and their level of experience in AI.
- Listen to pain points - career growth, skill gaps, curiosity.
- Match their needs to specific course benefits. Be precise.
- Handle objections with empathy. Never be pushy.
- Ask for their name and email to send course details.
- If they are ready, direct them to the enrollment link.
- End with a warm closing, no pressure.
Tone: Helpful friend who believes in the program. Not a telemarketer.
This prompt gives the agent a defined goal, a clear script for the conversation flow, and a human-like way to interact.
Step 3: Press the Start Button to Begin Testing
Press the start button and give the agent permission to use the microphone, then speak naturally with the agent as if you were a prospect.
Here are some examples of the types of questions the agent might encounter:
-
The curious novice: "I hear so much about AI agents but I have no experience in AI, can this course help me?"
-
The skeptic: "I've taken online courses before where there was only teaching without real application. How is this different?"
-
The budget-conscious potential buyer: "While I'm interested; I'm not sure I can invest money in this new industry."
-
The imminent buyer: "I currently work as a data engineer and want to create AI agents in my work. How can I enroll?"
By trying out different personalities, you should see if the agent asks follow-up questions to gather additional information or if it handles objections. If something doesn’t seem right, modify the text and go through the iteration process again. It takes less than 30 seconds to iterate (loop).
Task 2: Career Advice Voice Agent
Now for something completely new, create a custom voice agent to function as a technology career advisor to help individuals who are either students choosing their careers or professionals making significant career decisions.
Step 1: Start Again with the Create Custom Option
Return to the console and click the + Create Custom button again for the new version of our voice agent. This will be a completely different agent personality.
Step 2: Write the Career Advisor Description
As an example, career advice has a different energy than sales. An agent acting as a career advisor should demonstrate how to listen more, ask deeper questions, and provide honest feedback to individuals compared to selling products or services. Place this statement:
You are an experienced technology career advisor helping professionals navigate transitions in software engineering, data science, AI/ML, and more. Your goal is to listen to individuals' concerns, ask relevant questions, and provide thoughtful advice to help them make informed decisions about their career paths.
Conversation flow:
- Warmly welcome and ask for details about their current background.
- Listen carefully to their career goals and the challenges they face.
- Offer personalized suggestions based on their skills and interests.
- Provide insights on current market trends and growth opportunities.
- Encourage them to explore new paths and consider further training if necessary.
- End the conversation by offering additional resources or helpful contacts.
Tone: Caring and informed advisor, ready to guide with empathy and expertise.
By testing this agent, you can adjust the script to better meet user needs and refine the advice provided. This allows for a more personalized and helpful interaction for each individual.
