Hank Green, known for his talents as a novelist, comedian, and YouTuber, recently found himself at the center of a controversy regarding his use of AI chatbots. With an audience of 3.2 million subscribers, Green felt the need to publicly apologize for his growing reliance on these technological tools.

The controversy escalated after an unusual phrase, "I appreciate the pushback," was spoken in a video on his educational channel Complexly. This expression led viewers to suspect that the script had been written with the help of a chatbot, and that this phrase was an accidentally included response to an AI suggestion.

In a now-deleted post on X, Green admitted to having created this video "under immense pressure" and having used ChatGPT for research. However, he clarified that the phrase in question was a response to a guest in the episode, not a script error.

Reactions and Public Apologies

On Reddit, Green expressed his embarrassment over the situation, stating he was "mortified" to have disappointed his audience. He announced his intention to reduce the frequency of his videos to avoid repeating such situations.

Green sought to clarify his use of ChatGPT, asserting that he only used it to find articles and resources on specific topics. He emphasized that the ideas and opinions expressed in his videos remained his own, although he acknowledged that his critics were justified.

Green's Concerns About AI

While he does not consider himself a fierce opponent of AI, Green shared several concerns regarding this technology. He expressed worry about the environmental impact of AI, particularly concerning climate change, as well as the speed at which companies are seeking to monopolize economic power through these technologies.

"What scares me the most is losing the trust of my audience," he confided. "I want my words to be authentic, but I've moved so fast that I'm no longer sure of my own process. I want to ensure that in the future, my words are truly my own."

A Pause to Refocus

Green seems determined to take a step back to clarify his creative process. He announced that he would be posting less frequently on his YouTube channels, wishing to focus on projects where writing plays a central role, such as in a recent meditative video.

He is also considering producing more spontaneous videos, sharing his thoughts in front of the camera without a prior script.

"But above all, I have to acknowledge that the level of dopamine I got from interacting with LLMs... from constantly producing more... is not healthy for me nor beneficial for the world," he concluded. "It's reckless and has distanced me from the reality of people's concerns on this issue."
