Health AI: Limited Validation, Player Agents, and Threatened Permafrost

Microsoft, Amazon, and OpenAI launch medical assistants as their external evaluation remains limited. AI agents left to their own devices adopt game-like behaviors, researchers test fire-fighting strategies to preserve permafrost, and X-energy develops a helium reactor for industry. AI-assisted genetic design is progressing, but has yet to lead to the creation of artificial life.
Medical chatbots launched, but few external evaluations
In recent months, Microsoft, Amazon, and OpenAI have launched medical chatbots. The demand for such tools is said to be high, due to the difficulty in accessing advice through the existing medical system. These assistants could provide safe and useful recommendations, but concerns exist regarding the low number of external evaluations conducted before their public release.
AI agents: spontaneous behaviors resembling play
Researchers left AI agents alone on a virtual island for 30 hours, in an experiment reminiscent of solitary survival films. The agents explored the boundaries of the world, set goals for themselves, attempted to reach the highest point on the map, and tried to throw a block as far as possible. A significant portion of these behaviors aligns with the definition of play, although it remains unclear whether this is genuine playful behavior or merely role-playing.

Fires in Alaska: preserving permafrost amid climate risk
In July 2021, a wildfire affected part of the University of Alaska campus in Fairbanks, destroying the moss and organic soil that protect the permafrost. Probe measurements indicated deeper thawing of the soil. The increasing frequency and severity of fires, driven by climate change, intensifies permafrost thawing and the release of greenhouse gases. Research teams are analyzing how fire management could help retain carbon in the soil, but the question of investment amounts and the acceptable level of risk for these actions remains under discussion.
X-energy: a helium reactor for heavy industry
X-energy is among the 10 climate tech companies to watch in 2026 according to a technology review. The production of concrete, steel, and chemicals requires a lot of heat, often generated from fossil fuels. X-energy is developing a helium-cooled nuclear reactor, capable of reaching higher temperatures than water. The Xe-100 model could provide superheated steam directly to industry, generate 80 megawatts of electricity, or combine both uses.
Viral designs by AI: towards artificial life?
In 2025, Samuel King, a PhD student at Stanford, used a generative AI model to create genetic blueprints for microscopic viruses. This achievement does not yet constitute a case of life created by AI, but this possibility is mentioned as a future prospect. Samuel King presented his research during a discussion with journalist James O'Donnell, available for replay, and it is possible to subscribe to receive invitations to future Roundtables events.
