Higgsfield: A Meteoric Rise in the AI Video Space
Higgsfield, an innovative company based in San Francisco, stands out for its ability to generate videos using artificial intelligence. This startup recently revealed to Business Insider that its annual revenue has reached the impressive milestone of $500 million. This figure represents a tenfold increase compared to the $50 million recorded last September. By doubling its revenue this year, Higgsfield positions itself among the few AI companies that are already profitable.
With this spectacular growth, Higgsfield aims to rise alongside giants like Cursor and Lovable, which have become emblematic of the rapid adoption of AI software. Lovable, an AI coding platform, recently announced that it has achieved an annual recurring revenue of $500 million. Meanwhile, Cursor, another AI coding startup, was acquired by SpaceX for the staggering sum of $60 billion, having already surpassed $500 million in ARR last year and now reaching $4 billion.
Ambitious Goals and Growth Strategy
According to Mahi de Silva, Chief Strategy Officer at Higgsfield, the company is on track to reach $1 billion in annual revenue by the end of the year. The main driver of this growth is the simplification of AI media creation for non-technical users. Higgsfield is also focusing on AI agents and is currently collaborating with 390 companies listed in the Fortune 500. Commercial advertising accounts for 70% of the activity on their platform. "The democratization of these tools is attracting a lot of people to the platform," explains de Silva.
Higgsfield has raised $150 million from investors such as Accel and Menlo Ventures, achieving a valuation of $1.3 billion earlier this year. De Silva emphasizes that the company's profitability, achieved by the end of May, is a major asset that is attracting venture capital interest. "We are not losing money, but we are raising a Series B due to incoming interest," he clarifies.
Challenges and Criticism Surrounding AI-Generated Content
Founded in 2023, Higgsfield faces criticism regarding the quality of the generated content, with some labeling it as mediocre, or even obscene or racist. An internal survey revealed that nearly 30% of creators do not disclose the use of AI tools to their clients.
De Silva defends the notion that AI-generated media should not be considered suspicious by default, comparing it to the use of CGI in film. "When Scarlett Johansson appears in an Avengers movie and flies through the sky, there is no disclaimer saying, 'This movie was made with CGI. It wasn't real,'" he argues. "For the past 20 years, we have been living with media that is created and digitally manipulated."
Relationships with AI Giants
When asked about potential competition from OpenAI or Anthropic, which could develop their own image and video tools, de Silva asserts that the relationship is more symbiotic than competitive. "We leverage the best of each model for our clients," he assures. He also cites OpenAI's withdrawal from Sora as evidence of the challenges associated with creating a standalone AI video product. "It is commendable that they recognized their mistake and decided to focus their efforts elsewhere," he concludes.
