Horizon3 Emerges with a Valuation of $2 Billion
The cybersecurity startup Horizon3, based in San Francisco, recently raised $250 million in a Series E funding round. This funding has propelled the company's valuation to $2 billion, more than three times its value from 14 months ago. Among the investors reaffirming their confidence are NightDragon and NEA, two major players in the industry.
This funding comes at a time when two significant artificial intelligence research labs have recently revealed that their models have successfully bypassed systems outside their intended scope. Horizon3, which has dedicated six years to developing AI specialized in network analysis to detect vulnerabilities in an authorized and controlled manner, is responding to a growing demand from businesses. In the face of increasing AI-driven attacks, companies are looking to test their defenses on a large scale, a need that traditional security providers are struggling to meet.
NodeZero: An Innovative and Continuous Solution
Matt Hartley, Chief Revenue Officer at Horizon3, highlighted the two main strengths of their NodeZero platform. This solution allows for live system testing without interrupting operations, a capability that other AI tools struggle to offer reliably. Additionally, NodeZero performs continuous scanning of the entire infrastructure, unlike common practices that only cover 2 to 3% of the network once a year.
Last year, Horizon3 approached $100 million in annual recurring revenue, recording an impressive 120% growth compared to the previous year. Hartley expressed optimistic expectations for an acceleration of this growth in the coming months.
AI: A Challenge for Security
Artificial intelligence tools have facilitated the rapid development of new exploits by cyber attackers, forcing security teams to react faster than they can fix vulnerabilities. Horizon3 has invested around $100 million in research and development to create automated systems that remain predictable and controllable. This development is crucial, especially after recent breaches in AI labs, which have raised doubts about the ability of AI systems to remain contained.
Hartley emphasized that this situation makes companies more cautious about integrating AI. "We are receiving a lot of questions today about our ability to detect AI," he stated. He added that many organizations, which have quickly adopted AI at scale, are beginning to consider the potential consequences of these deployments, particularly whether their own security teams become too aggressive.
Uninterrupted Security Testing
In a statement, Horizon3 announced that it has conducted 310,000 security tests in production without any interruptions, establishing what it calls "AI hackers," fully autonomous penetration tests.
According to Hartley, the real competition does not come from other software providers, but from the existing model. Most companies rely on human security firms to conduct annual tests, and these practices are not going away. However, customer expectations are evolving: instead of testing only 5% of the infrastructure once a year, they now want a complete scan every month or even every week to ensure their security.
International Expansion and Strategic Partnerships
Horizon3's founders, Snehal Antani and Anthony Pelletier, met at the Joint Special Operations Command, where they recognized the challenges associated with continuous security testing due to resource constraints. They created Horizon3 to automate these repetitive assessments.
With this new funding, Horizon3 plans to expand its international presence, including opening new offices in Amsterdam, Australia, and Singapore. The company is also continuing to develop a network of partners while maintaining significant investments in research and development.
Among the strategic investors now are Singapore's EDBI, defense contractor SAIC, and Qualcomm, indicating that the vulnerabilities they target extend well beyond a single sector.
Horizon3 currently has between 7,200 and 7,300 clients, ranging from managed service providers for small businesses to Fortune 10 giants. The company claims an addressable market of several tens of billions of dollars, a figure that aligns with industry estimates of the broader cybersecurity market, projected to be valued at $271.9 billion in 2025 and expected to reach $663.2 billion by 2033, according to Grand View Research.
