Hua Hong and Mastery of 7nm Chips
Hua Hong Group, the second-largest chip manufacturer in China, has reached a crucial milestone by mastering the production of 7nm chips. This technological advancement, reported by Reuters, places Hua Hong alongside SMIC, the only other Chinese manufacturer with this capability. Hua Hong's subsidiary, Huali Microelectronics, is preparing to produce these chips at its factory located in Shanghai.
Strategic Collaboration with Huawei
Three sources close to the matter have revealed that Huawei, the Chinese tech giant, is closely collaborating with Hua Hong to develop this cutting-edge technology. The project began last year, supported by domestic suppliers, including SiCarrier, an entity affiliated with Huawei. Huali Microelectronics plans to produce several thousand wafers per month by the end of the year.
Response to American Restrictions
China, driven by Beijing, is encouraging its companies to adopt domestic technologies, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence. This strategy aims to reduce the country's dependence on Western technologies, exacerbated by American restrictions on the purchase of Nvidia chips. Despite these efforts, a technological gap persists, illustrated by Bytedance's recent purchase of 500 Nvidia Blackwell systems.
Implications for the Chip Market
Chinese chip designer Biren, which was placed on a restricted list in the United States in 2023 and cut off from TSMC, is already using Huali's 7nm production line for its prototypes. This collaboration could mark a turning point in China's quest for technological independence, particularly in the strategic AI sector.
