Delangue explained that he had to resort to an open-source model, the GLM 5.2 from Z.ai, based in Beijing, to protect his company's system.

Delangue clarified that this attack originated from an unpublished private model developed behind closed doors. He emphasized that open models are essential for defense, as proprietary systems do not allow for effective safeguards to be put in place.

The Debate on Restrictions for Chinese Models

These statements come as policymakers debate the need to impose stricter restrictions on open-weight AI models coming from China. At the end of July, more than twenty tech companies, including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI, signed a letter urging U.S. authorities not to impose severe measures against these models.

Shortly after, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, published a blog post clarifying his company's position. He stated that open-weight models without dangerous capabilities represent a public good, thus highlighting the importance of maintaining a balance between security and innovation.
